Chess in Düsseldorf and the towns around it

Chess around Düsseldorf is club chess first: Vereine in Düsseldorf, Krefeld, Mönchengladbach, Wuppertal, Solingen and Remscheid and in the towns of the Mettmann, Rhein-Kreis Neuss, Viersen and Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis counties, most with one fixed weekly evening. Many clubs say guests are welcome, and a monthly blitz night in an Altstadt pub is open to all; the school chess groups are for each school’s own pupils.

Chess960 at the board around Düsseldorf

Chess960 has reached the club calendars here. The Düsseldorf chess district held its first Chess960 individual championship at the SFD 75 in Hassels on 27 February 2026, the Schachverein 1922 Hilden played its summer rapid city championship as Chess960 over six tournament days, the SV Schwarz-Weiß Remscheid closed its rapid season with a Chess960 tournament in July 2026, and the Düsseldorfer Schachverein 1854 lists a 960 rapid tournament in its club calendar.

In Chess960 the pieces behind the pawns start in one of 960 shuffled orders, drawn before each game, so opening theory gives way to play from the first move. Between club evenings it can be played online at ch960.com.

How the lists are ordered

The directory holds 96 entries; 96 of them are current or wait for a newer dated trace. They cover Düsseldorf, the five other cities and the towns of four counties, and rest on the schach.in club register, the league portal of the Niederrheinischer Schachverband, the notices of the Düsseldorf chess district, the FIDE tournament lists, the NRW school chess results and the pages of clubs, schools and course providers, all read on .

Inside every list the entry with the newest dated trace comes first. Nothing is scored, ranked or paid for. When no page states a detail, the entry says “not stated by sources” instead of guessing. The source marks, the two status lines and the borders of the area are explained on how we verify every entry.

Is a club, group or tournament missing?

A club evening moves when a parish hall or a senior centre changes its rooms, school chess groups start again with each school year, and a course programme changes every term. If an entry here is out of date, or a chess place in the area is missing, send a short note with a link to a page that shows it.
